There is approximately one resident advisor for every ten students. Students are expected to live within the policies of the residence halls and the Institute.

Living on Campus

Students will be housed in a residence hall located near the Blank Honors Center on The University of Iowa campus. Most of the activities will be within brief walking distance of the residence hall. Male and female students will be assigned to separate floors and all students will share a room with at least one other student.

In addition to academic programming, students will be able to participate in a variety of cultural and recreational activities. Dances, picnics, and social events are scheduled by the staff for the students. Students will also have access to The University of Iowa libraries, computer facilities and study areas.

Visiting Students

We ask that families inform staff so that arrangements can be made to facilitate any family visits. Because the Institute is dedicated to the development of a cohesive community, students may not have non-family visitors during the program.

Check-in for the program will be held from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm. The check-in process will begin at Burge Residence Hall front desk.  All students should be checked in during this time. If you are unable to check-in during these times please contact the Belin-Blank Center. The opening for students and families will begin at 4:00 pm.

Check-out for the program will be held after the closing on Friday. The closing for students and families will being at 1:00 pm and will conclude by 2:30 pm. Students should pack all their belongings prior to the closing.

Cancellation Policy

If you must cancel, please call the Belin-Blank Center at 800/336-6463 as soon as possible to decline the class so that a student on the waiting list may attend. A $100 administrative fee will be retained for cancellations received by June 1st. Cancellations after that time may not be refunded.

International Students

International students will join U.S. students in classes, residence halls, dining facilities, and recreational and cultural events during their stay on campus.

While most of the information on website is the same for U.S. and international students, there are some differences:

  • International students will arrive one day earlier, and depart one day later, than the advertised dates. This allows additional time for students to adjust from traveling and more flexibility with scheduling of flights.
    • JSI Arrive Saturday, June 15 Depart Saturday, June 22
  • The Belin-Blank Center purchases health insurance for all international students that covers them while they are at the JSI program.
  • The Belin-Blank Center will file necessary documents to make visa procedures as efficient as possible.
  • The Belin-Blank Center will provide transportation to campus and back to the airport when students fly into the Eastern Iowa Airport (CID). This is the only airport to which we provide service.
  • The cost for these additional services is $550. This brings the total cost of each program to:
    • JSI $1,575
    • Financial aid and scholarships are not available to international students.
