Chautauqua is "the most American thing in America".
Former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt

An adult educational movement of the late 19th century, Chautauqua's began in 1874 with the first gathering held on the shores of beautiful Chautauqua Lake, NY. The Chautauqua movement remained highly popular through the early 20th century and brought together speakers, teachers, musicians, entertainers, preachers, and specialists of the day. According to the Chautauqua movement was the largest event ever held in the U.S. or Canada.

In July, the Belin-Blank Center is hosting another Chautauqua series in Iowa City.

  • Chautauqua 1 (July 8-13, 2019, including class on Saturday)
  • Chautauqua 2 (July 15-20, 2019, including class on Saturday)

We will feature six separate workshops, all different from 2018 Chautauqua classes, on campus with additional online components. Participants may enroll in any one of the workshops. Those who enroll at the graduate level for all three workshops in either week-or both-receive an automatic tuition scholarship from the Belin-Blank Center for one of three classes (i.e., three workshops for the cost of two; six for the cost of four).
