Explore using Shakespeare in intermediate and middle school classrooms with author and educator Jen Szwaya who has used Romeo and Juliet, Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Hamlet to support learners needing to be challenged with content that is complex, rich, and of high interest for over 10 years.
Participants will review a collection of lessons and resources that address learning goals relating to point of view, character development, theme, comparing and contrasting, as well as multimedia interpretations. Strategies to support the social and emotional needs of students, the needs of multilingual learners, and tips for supporting twice exceptional students will be included.
We will also discuss how the planning and implementation of a student-directed Shakespeare festival can maintain motivation, develop student agency, and allow for real world learning experiences to occur naturally alongside students’ study of the Bard’s words.

Jennifer Szwaya earned both her bachelors (Elementary Education) and masters (Gifted Education) from Northeastern University (Chicago, IL). She has served several school districts in the suburbs of Chicago as a classroom teacher, a gifted specialist, and an instructional coach. Teaching Shakespeare to her students has been a "passion project" throughout her career. When she is not busy in elementary schools, Jennifer can be found scavenging yard sales and discount shops to find those extra touches for the Shakespeare Festival such as rubber chickens, yards of green tulle fabric, and old wedding dresses.
